An Unusual Project
I was asked to cover up the excessive ornamental details in this painting purchased in China. Matching color to the original painting can be challenging. Fortunately, this is exactly what we’ve been covering in class lately and I was excited to have a real-world example to show my students.
Lots of Yellow
I was surprised but also not surprised to discover that most of the painting was created using colors straight out of the tube – a common feature of paintings churned out in China’s “art factories”. Yellow Ochre dominated my palatte throughout.
Making Quick Work of It
Repainting his clothing did not take a lot of time, but many layers were required to effectively cover the designs – three layers of paint and one layer of varnish with drying time inbetween each. He would have made a nice addition to my home!
